Lima – Holy Tuesday
Returning to tradition, a much refreshing change, since 2014 colonial custom
has resumed and the so-called “Steps in the Passion of Jesus Christ” were reestablished,
a procession that was celebrated last during the final years of the monarchy in
Peru. From the church of St. Dominic, with the relic of the Lignum Crucis at
the helm, the Captive Nazarene, the Lord at the Column, the Lord of Justice,
the Lord Falling, Our Lady of the Rosary of Sorrows, and Fortunate St. Mary Magdalene
depart towards the Cathedral.

The archconfraternity of the True Cross, the custodians of the Lignum
Crucis, was founded in 1540 by Francisco Pizarro Gonzalez along with the nobles
of the city, after receiving a relic of the Cross on which Jesus Christ died,
from Pope Paul III.
Arequipa – Holy Tuesday
During the morning, the oils are blessed in the Chrism mass, and the clergy
renew their vows. In the afternoon, from the church of the Society of Jesus,
set out the images of Jesus Captive, and the Just Judge (brought from Spain in
the 17
th century,) which is carried in absolute silence by penitents
clad in purple habits with long hoods, in Sevilian style. The Christ of the
Good Death and, since 1949, Our Lady of Hope are also brought out.

Concurrently, in the afternoon in the area of Yanahuara, takes place the “encounter,”
between Lord Jesus the Nazarene, St. John the Apostle, St. Veronica, and the
Virgin of Sorrows, who reunite in a shower of flowers tossed by the faithful around
the main square.
